The boat with 45 aboard – many reportedly drunk – capsized on Lake Albert, with the craft understood to have been overloaded
A boat carrying a football team and their fans capsized on Lake Albert in Uganda, drowning an estimated 30 passengers.
The overcrowded boat with 45 aboard had capsized after too many passengers – many of them understood to be drunk – moved to one side, destabilising it.
The travelling party was from Buliisa on its way to a Christmas Day football match in Hoima District and in a party atmosphere.
Tragedy struck after the boat sunk, however, with rescue operations taking place by authorities afterwards and assisted by local fishermen.
Reports state that 15 people have been rescued, while nine bodies have been recovered.
