Football star Lionel Messi’s 21-month prison sentence for tax fraud has been changed to a fine by the Spanish courts. The Barcelona star must pay €252,000 ($288,000, £223,000), equating to €400 for each day of the sentence, the court said in a statement. Messi, along with his father Jorge, was found guilty of defrauding Spain of €4.1m between 2007 and 2009. His father’s 15-month sentence was replaced with a €180,000 fine. Eight people – including seven children – have died in a stampede ahead of a football match in Malawi, police say. Dozens more were injured in the crush at Lilongwe’s Bingu national stadium. The stampede reportedly happened as thousands of people tried to find seats ahead of a friendly between top sides Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers. Former Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu says the recent death of Ivory Coast’s Cheick Tiote should be a wake up call to act over heart problems in Africa. Tiote, who was 30, died earlier this month after collapsing as he trained his Chinese club Beijing Enterprises. Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo was the hero as Chile reached the Confederations Cup final by beating Portugal on penalties. Bravo denied efforts from Ricardo Quaresma, Joao Moutinho and Nani as Chile converted all their spot-kicks. It was perhaps justice for Chile, who had a strong claim for a penalty denied deep in extra time and also hit the post twice in quick succession. Jose Mourinho said an emotional goodbye to his father Felix on Tuesday morning as he attended his funeral in Setubal, Portugal. The Manchester United manager confirmed that his father had passed away on Sunday evening at the age of 79 after suffering with ill health for several months.
