In 2011, the Ghana Beach Soccer Association organized the first ever beach soccer league in Africa with six teams which became ten clubs by the second season. Two years earlier, the association came into being following a successful application to the National Sports Council which is now the National Sports Authority. The Black Sharks of Ghana overcame a poor start to eliminate the Harambee Stars of Kenya by beating them 7 goals to 1.
