The Sports Ministry has revealed that it cost government an amount in the region GH¢100,000 for the renaming of the Tamale Sports Stadium to the Aliu Mahama Stadium.
The Ministry organized several events including students forum, keep fit sessions and a football match between the Southern and Northern sectors to mark the stadium rechristening.
In an interview with Starrsportsgh.com, Deputy Sports Minister Pius Hadzide says government was modest in their expenditure on organization of the weeklong stadium rechristening in Tamale.
“Late Aliu Mahama paid his due to the development of sports and even in the construction of the former Tamale Sports Stadium, now Aliu Mahama Stadium. So there were a series of activities that were organized to honor the hero.
“Organizational cost, the Trophy, beyond the trophy GH¢50,000 was at stake as the cash prize but we were very modest in our expenditure,” Hadzide told starrsportsgh.com.
Some reports had claimed the activities had been sponsored by McDan Shipping but the Minister denies.
“McDan did not give the Ministry of Sports one penny for any of the activities organized.
“A contingent of about 50 men stayed in Tamale for about a week, transportation, feeding and accommodation. The cost is a little over GH¢100,000,” he added.
