The Gabon Football Federation (Fegafoot) announced on Friday that former Benfica, Spain and Real Madrid head coach Jose Antonio Camacho has been appointed as the new head coach of the country’s national team
Camacho, 61, takes over the reins from Portuguese coach Jorge Costa, with the former Spanish international having arrived in Libreville last Saturday to hold talks with Fegafoot president Alain Pierre Mounguengui.
Camacho will now have six weeks to prepare the Panthers for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, set to be hosted in the country from January 14 to February 5.
Gabon have been drawn in Group A along with Cameroon, Burkina Faso and Guinea Bissau.
The opening game of the tournament will take place at the Stade de l’Amitie, with Gabon taking on Afcon newbies ,Guinea-Bissau. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Co will be tasked with reaching the at least the knockout stages of the continental showpiece.
