Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak says Sergio Aguero will remain at the club this summer.
Aguero has two years remaining on his contract at City but there had been widespread suggestions that Aguero could leave City this summer – something Al Mubarak was quick to dismiss.
Al Mubarak said: “Absolutely there was never any doubt about that. I’ve read a lot about the speculation on this. It’s ridiculous.
“Sergio Aguero is one of the best players in the world and we are a team that aspires to win every competition we compete in.
“Having Sergio Aguero in the squad is an absolute must, it has never been in doubt.”
A player who is adored by City’s supporters, Aguero has scored 169 goals since his arrival in 2011 and requires just nine more to surpass Eric Brook as the club’s all-time leading scorer.
Aguero endured some frustrating moments this season and found himself left out of the starting line-up at times, with Gabriel Jesus being preferred.
However, Aguero still managed to make a significant contribution – he scored 20 goals in the Premier League – and it appears that he remains a key part of Pep Guardiola’s plans.
Towards the end of the season Guardiola managed to get Jesus and Aguero working effectively in tandem, with the former cutting in from the right flank and the latter dropping deep to create space.
