Atletico Madrid star Thomas Tey Partey is currently leading the race to be named the substantive Ghana captain in massive shake-up ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, SportsworldGhana.com has been hinted.
Coach Kwesi Appiah will make the crucial announcement this week when the Black Stars provisional squad for the tournament is named.
Reports on Monday emerged that Fenerbahce forward Andre Ayew who happens to the deputy Black Stars captain had been named as the new captain but that seems to be taking a new twist as the GFA Normalisation Committee has backed Thomas Partey to succeed Asamoah Gyan instead of the 2019 U-20 World Cup winner.
This comes after coach Appiah took the decision to strip Asamoah Gyan of the team’s leadership role as he would only be half-fit player at the tournament in Egypt.
Partey, who captained the Black Stars against DR Congo during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers and also in friendlies against Iceland and Japan is expected to lead the squad to help Ghana win the title in Egypt since last winning it thirty-seven [37] years ago.
