Black Stars coach Otto Addo has expressed disappointment at his team’s failure to be clinical in front of goal, as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Angola in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The late strike from Felicio Milson ended Ghana’s 24-year unbeaten run at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, leaving the Black Stars with a tough task ahead of their next match.
In his post-match press conference, Addo highlighted that his players took too much time to make decisions in good positions to score, and that they were not egoistic enough to take shots on goal.
“Surely, we have to be more clinical. I saw a lot of situations where we could have shot earlier, we should have been a little bit more egoistic,” he said. “Even though I don’t like if a player has a better position and you don’t give him the ball, I don’t like it. But this game, I think there was a lot of situations where we could have taken shots and we passed to the next one, passed to the next one.”
Addo acknowledged that his players tried everything and controlled the match, but ultimately, football is unpredictable and sometimes teams win despite playing well.
“I was a player myself. I had bad games when we won and sometimes you play good and you lose. This is football,” he added.
The Black Stars now face a tough task of beating Niger in Morocco to get their campaign back on track. Morocco and Sudan are currently top of Group C, and will face each other on Monday.
Ghana’s match against Niger will take place on the same day, with Addo’s team knowing that they need to get a positive result to keep their hopes alive.
