Kofi Adams and Members of Parliament have successfully steered Ghana into a new era of sports development following the passage of the Ghana Sports Fund Bill.
The landmark legislation was approved by Parliament on Wednesday, December 18, 2025, clearing the way for the creation of a structured and sustainable funding system to support sports across the country. The new Sports Development Fund is expected to strengthen athlete welfare, improve sports infrastructure, boost grassroots programmes, and enhance talent identification nationwide.
The Bill was presented by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and went through several layers of review before its approval. It received Cabinet backing and was thoroughly examined by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth and Sports, with inputs from the Ministry of Finance, the Attorney-General’s Department, the Parliamentary Legal Committee, and other key stakeholders.
Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams, who led the process in Parliament, described the approval as a major turning point for Ghanaian sports. The Bill went through multiple readings, debates, and amendments, with both the Majority and Minority sides contributing, reflecting a strong bipartisan commitment to long-term sports development.
The Sports Fund is expected to generate substantial financial resources each year through dedicated revenue sources, donations, and parliamentary allocations. Management of the Fund will be handled by an independent governing board, operating under strict accountability measures and aligned with the upcoming National Sports Policy.
The passage of the Bill also aligns with the broader vision of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, which aims to reposition sports as a key driver of national development. The focus, according to the policy direction, is to move beyond short-term medal success and invest in lasting legal, financial, and institutional reforms that will benefit Ghanaian sports for generations to come.
