Harry Maguire responds to rumours of Man Utd dressing room unrest

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has addressed rumours of dressing room unrest at the club following their hugely disappointing Champions League exit to Atletico Madrid.

United were dumped out of the competition at the last 16 stage on Tuesday night, playing into their experienced opponents’ hands with a particularly inept second-half showing as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

This is the latest in a series of underwhelming and occasionally shocking results for the Red Devils this season, including heavy home defeats to rivals Liverpool and Man City, as well as a comprehensive away thumping at the hands of their local rivals.

Since Ralf Rangnick replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer there have been incessant rumours of dressing room disquiet at the club, including disgruntlement at the continued selection of out-of-sorts centre-back Maguire.

There were audible jeers and boos when the skipper was sacrificed late on for an attacking replacement, and he faced more questions about what was going on behind the scenes after the match.”There’s no problems in the dressing room,” Maguire insisted. “When you play for this club, there’s always reports and lots of media attention. It’s got nothing to do with the result.”

The England international conceded that United hadn’t deserved to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League having not been good enough over the course of the two legs and the season as a whole.”We can do more as a team,” he continued. ‘We’ve got to do more, we owe it to the club, we owe it to the fans.

“We have to look at ourselves as players. The lads gave everything, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough. We haven’t been good enough this season.”
