Netherlands Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen have announced the signing of Ghanaian versatile defender Terry Lartey, the club announced on Wednesday.

The Dutch-born Ghanaian defender returns to his former club to help them retain a top-flight status at the end of the 2022-23 season.

He formerly played for AFC Jong Ajax and excelled for the club in the Dutch Eerste Divisie.

The Amsterdam-born right back annex central defender already trained with coach Rogier Meijer’s team during the preparation.

The 26-year-old footballer of Ghanaian origin is no stranger to NEC. Between 2018 and 2021 Lartey Sanniez was also under contract with the club from Nijmegen.

Lartey Sanniez was born on August 10, 1996 in Amsterdam. In 2008, the young footballer made the switch from AVV Zeeburgia to Ajax’s youth academy. He then went through all the youth teams of the club from the capital, after which he signed his first professional contract in early 2015. On January 25, 2015, Lartey Sanniez made his professional football debut for Jong Ajax in the Eerste Divisie. Lartey Sanniez played football for three years with the second team of the Amsterdammers. A debut for Ajax 1 was not forthcoming, after which the then 21-year-old footballer left for NEC in mid-2018 on a free transfer.

On August 17, 2018, Lartey Sanniez made his debut for NEC in a home game against SC Cambuur. More than two months later, the cheerful Amsterdammer scored his first – and so far only – goal for the Nijmegen team. In the cup match against Fortuna Sittard, lost 2-3, the defender put the 1-0 on the scoreboard.

Technical director Ted van Leeuwen explains: “Terry trained with the team during the entire preparation. With his professional attitude and attitude, he is a valuable addition to the selection. We know exactly what to do with him. Terry can play in all positions in the defense and gives our selection more space in width. We are happy to have him with us this season.”

Lartey Sanniez has been active for the Nijmegen team for three seasons, after which he left for the Slovenian NK Celje in mid-2021. He made fourteen appearances in the first team of the club from Slovenia and did not score. In May of this year, the Amsterdammer’s contract was terminated. The defender already trained with coach Rogier Meijer’s team in preparation.
