Bristol City’s Antoine Semenyo has been a crucial part of his side’s cause this season, scoring four goals so far. With the club celebrating Black history month, they took a detailed look at his footballing career so far. Below is his journey in the sport.

Antoine Semenyo’s footballing journey has taken quite an unconventional route.

Born in South London, Semenyo spent the large part of his youth playing grassroots football, not attached to an Academy.

The youngster would head to the likes of Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and Swindon Town for trials, but to no avail.

As an 18-year-old, Semenyo landed in the West Country as he began pre-season with SGS College’s football programme, and it would only be a matter of months before he caught the eye of Academy Director Brian Tinnion.

2018 saw the striker put pen to paper on a four-year deal with Bristol City and to continue his progression he would head out on loan to League Two’s Newport County.

He was a regular feature for the League Two outfit, who reached the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup and the play-offs, netting six times in 32 appearances.

The Academy graduate was then recalled by Lee Johnson in January 2019, going on to make four Sky Bet Championship appearances.

In the 2019/20 campaign, Semenyo featured 11 times for the Robins, before agreeing a temporary switch to join League One Sunderland.

The next season would see Semenyo establish himself as a regular fixture in the City starting XI as he made 50 appearances across the 2020/21 campaign, earning himself the Young Player of the Year accolade come the end of the season.

Last season, the forward’s goal contributions skyrocketed (20) as he scored eight goals and provided 12 assists over the course of 32 appearances.

His great form in front of goal was rewarded with a call-up to the Ghana squad and he was introduced in the 75th minute in Ghana’s 3-0 victory over Madagascar to make his international debut for the Black Stars on June 1st.

Semenyo was called up to the most recent Black Stars camp as they continued their preparations for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year, and the City forward is right in contention to have a seat on the plane.
