Chris Hughton should have been the Black Stars head coach at the World Cup

Former vice president of the Ghana Football Association George Afriyie says he can’t seem to wrap his head around why Chris Hughton didn’t lead the Black Stars at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The 64-year-old was part of Ghana’s technical team at the global showpiece playing the role of the team’s Technical Advisor while Otto Addo was the main man on the touchlines.

If the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager can’t handle the position given his expertise, then no one can, claims Afriyie.

“Chris, for me, should have taken us to the World Cup. Because you have a manager who has managed a top English football club. You and I know that there is no argument about this, that the English league, the Spanish, and German leagues are the best three in the world.

“So if you have a coach who has managed in the top three leagues in the world coming into your country as the national team coach, if he can’t do it, trust me nobody can do it,” George Afriyie told 3Sports.

Hughton was finally given the head coach role last month with his official unveiling set for Monday, March 20 in Kumasi.
