Ghana faces a challenging road to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as they have been drawn against West African rivals Mali in Group I.

Alongside Mali, the Black Stars will compete against Comoros, Madagascar, Central African Republic, and Chad in their quest for World Cup qualification.

The group stage format stipulates that the winner of Group I will secure automatic qualification for the World Cup. The second-placed team from the group will join the three best runners-up from other groups in a mini-tournament, where they will vie for Africa’s final slot in the tournament.

The 2026 World Cup will see an expanded format, with Africa being represented by nine to ten teams. Ghana, a four-time African champion, has participated in the World Cup on four occasions, with their most recent appearance being in 2022 in Qatar, where they were unable to progress beyond the group stage.

Despite their recent setback, Ghana boasts a respectable track record in the tournament, having advanced from the group stage twice in their four appearances.

On the other hand, top-seeded Mali is yet to experience World Cup football and will be motivated to make their mark, having been denied a place at the competition by Ghana in 2010.

The battle for World Cup qualification in Group I promises to be fiercely contested, with each team eager to secure their place among Africa’s representatives in the prestigious tournament.

Ghana will draw upon their rich footballing history and the talent within their squad to navigate the challenging path ahead and strive for another memorable World Cup campaign.
