2023 AFCON: ‘Cape Verde and Mozambique are the teams that can pose a threat to Ghana’ – John Paintsil

Former Ghana international, John Paintsil, believes that the technical team should focus more on preparing for Cape Verde and Mozambique ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as Egypt is no longer a significant threat.

Ghana has been placed in Group B for the 34th edition of AFCON in Ivory Coast next year, alongside Cape Verde, Mozambique, and seven-time champions Egypt.

Paintsil suggests that, rather than dwelling on Egypt’s strong reputation, the main focus should be on the underdog status of Cape Verde and Mozambique, which could pose challenges for Ghana.

In an interview with Graphic Sports, the former West Ham United and Fulham defender emphasizes the need to be cautious when facing Cape Verde and Mozambique, as they are challenging teams to play against.

“For me, the other two teams – taking Egypt out – are the most dangerous teams. Cape Verde and Mozambique are the teams that can pose a threat to Ghana because it is very difficult to play against these teams,” says Paintsil, who represented Ghana in six AFCON tournaments between 2002 and 2013.

Paintsil also commends Ghana’s coach, Chris Hughton, for implementing a new system that has strengthened the midfield and integrated skilled wingers, making the Black Stars a formidable force.

“I’ve watched our team play both outside and in Africa, and I can say the players’ performance is as high as it is when they play for their clubs. So, for me, Egypt is not a threat,” he adds.

He points out the strength of the wingers in the national team and their ability to create danger on the field.

Ghana is currently preparing in the USA for the tournament scheduled from January 13 to February 11, 2024, with their first match against Cape Verde on January 14.

The Black Stars aspire to win the tournament and break the country’s 41-year trophy drought.
