Tunisia is in search of redemption following their unexpected defeat in the Africa Cup of Nations opener, as they gear up to face Mali at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium this Saturday.

The Eagles of Carthage were left stunned by Namibia on Tuesday, while Mali secured a routine victory over South Africa in the initial Group E fixtures.

Despite Tunisia being expected to dominate Namibia, they found themselves on the wrong end of a loss, with the Southern African nation creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities. The breakthrough finally came in the 88th minute through Deon Hotto, securing Namibia’s historic first-ever victory at the Cup of Nations.

Jalel Kadri’s squad must swiftly recover from the perceived setback to avoid the risk of an early exit from the finals, acknowledging that even finishing third could suffice if results elsewhere align favorably.

Having evaded group-stage elimination since the 2013 competition in South Africa, Tunisia aims to uphold a streak that has propelled them to the quarter-finals in the previous four AFCON tournaments. However, their current predicament necessitates an exceptional performance to overcome one of the most formidable sides in AFCON 2023.

Mali’s impressive pressing tactics were noteworthy against South Africa, forcing 11 high turnovers in their 2-0 triumph over Bafana Bafana.

In that game, the West African side capitalized on three shots generated from the forced ball regains, outpacing all other teams in the competition’s opening round.

While Percy Tau’s missed penalty in the 19th minute could have altered the course of Mali’s opening match, the Eagles seized control in the second half.

Eric Chelle’s men aim to secure advancement to the first knockout round with a victory, recognizing that even a point would position them favorably for progression, even if they were to face a loss in the final game against Namibia.

Mali harbors ambitions of breaking new ground by reaching the first knockout round in three consecutive tournaments, a feat they are eager to accomplish with a positive result against Tunisia.

In their previous two AFCON encounters, Mali remains undefeated against the North African side, notably defeating the 2004 champions 1-0 in the last edition. A similar outcome would undoubtedly please Chelle and his determined troops.
