2023 AFCON: Zambia vs Morocco

The Stade de San Pedro awaits the climactic finale of Group F in the Africa Cup of Nations, hosting a riveting face-off between Zambia and Morocco on a Wednesday night.

In this high-stakes confrontation, the Atlas Lions and the Chipolopolo collide in a struggle where their progression to the round of 16 teeters on a precarious edge.

Zambia, reentering the AFCON arena after a three-edition absence, continues the quest for their first tournament victory since the extraordinary triumph of 2012. The Chipolopolo’s roar has been stifled by two consecutive draws, both culminating in a 1-1 scoreline. The most recent setback occurred against Tanzania, a match they were anticipated to win, marred by an early setback and a red card for defender Rodrick Kabwe. However, they exhibited resilience, salvaging a point through Patson Daka’s commanding late header.

With a mere two points from two games, Zambia confronts a must-win scenario against Morocco, the favorites of the tournament, in their concluding group clash. The historical head-to-head record tilts unfavorably for Zambia, having triumphed over Morocco only once in six meetings.

Morocco, widely acknowledged as potent contenders for the title, sets their sights on a second AFCON crown. The Atlas Lions showcased their prowess in the opening match, convincingly dispatching Tanzania 3-0. However, their smooth trajectory hit a snag with a frustrating 1-1 draw against DR Congo, marked by a post-match melee allegedly triggered by Morocco coach Walid Regragui’s confrontation with DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba.

Despite the draw, Morocco boasts a formidable performance, evident in their attacking flair with 25 shots taken (11 on target) across two matches. Defensively, they have conceded only two shots on target from 12 faced. Yet, their finishing demands improvement, converting only four of their 11 on-target attempts.

Zambia’s AFCON form reflects consecutive draws, while their overall form across all competitions comprises a blend of victories and draws. Morocco’s AFCON form consists of a win and a draw, mirroring a similar mix of outcomes in all competitions.

As the unfolding drama takes center stage in the final group fixture, both teams stand on the precipice of a battle that will sculpt their AFCON journey and determine the contender advancing to the knockout stage. The Stade de San Pedro transforms into the battleground for a football spectacle, where triumph holds paramount significance and the pursuit of glory reaches its zenith.
