Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and Flagbearer of the NPP, unveiled ambitious plans for a significant overhaul in sports funding aimed at propelling Ghana towards modern sports development. Addressing the nation on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, Dr. Bawumia stressed the critical need for a fundamental transformation in sports financing, citing the current inadequate and unsustainable funding as a major impediment to Ghana’s sporting aspirations.

“Sports is a multi-million dollar industry and an enabler for the youth,” remarked Dr. Bawumia during his address. “However, we have not realized our full sports potential, and we cannot maximize the full potential of Ghana sports with the same funding module we have operated with since independence.”

In his commitment to breathe new life into Ghana’s sports sector, Dr. Bawumia pledged to introduce policies and incentives aimed at boosting both private and public investment in sports. “My government will, therefore, prioritize the creation of incentives for corporate sponsorship as a sustainable module of financing sports development and promotion for our national teams, including football, athletics, and boxing at all levels,” he affirmed.

Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia detailed plans to allocate increased funding towards grassroots sports development, emphasizing the establishment of the School Sports Secretariat as a cornerstone initiative. This agency, operating under the purview of the Ministry responsible for Sports in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service and sports federations, will spearhead grassroots sports initiatives within schools.

The Vice President’s vision extends beyond mere rhetoric, as he outlined concrete steps to foster a conducive environment for sports growth. This includes the creation of tax incentives and waivers for corporate entities investing in sports, as well as the establishment of sports infrastructure development funds to upgrade and construct sports facilities across the country.

“We recognize the importance of nurturing talent from a young age,” Dr. Bawumia affirmed. “Our investment in grassroots sports development will not only unearth raw talent but also provide avenues for holistic development and character building among our youth.”

Moreover, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors to drive sustainable sports development. He envisaged partnerships with corporate entities, sports federations, and educational institutions to create a comprehensive framework for talent identification, training, and support.

“By harnessing the collective resources and expertise of all stakeholders, we can unleash the full potential of Ghanaian sports and position our nation as a powerhouse in the global arena,” he declared.

In addition to grassroots development, Dr. Bawumia underscored the importance of investing in sports science and technology to enhance performance and competitiveness. He pledged to establish research centers and provide scholarships for sports science studies to equip athletes and coaches with cutting-edge knowledge and techniques.

As the Vice President concluded his address, he reiterated his unwavering commitment to transforming Ghana’s sports landscape for the better. “Together, we can build a vibrant and inclusive sports ecosystem that empowers our youth, unites our nation, and brings glory to Ghana on the world stage,” he affirmed, inspiring hope and optimism for a brighter future in Ghanaian sports.
