”He’s a good defender” — Malik Jabir urges inclusion of Hearts of Oak’s Michael Ampadu in Black Stars squad

Asante Kotoko legend Malik Jabir has called for the inclusion of home-based players, particularly Hearts of Oak defender Michael Ampadu, in the Black Stars squad ahead of the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Ghana is set to face Mali on June 6 in Bamako before hosting the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium on June 10. The West African powerhouse aims to secure maximum points in both games following a sluggish start to the qualifiers last year.

The Black Stars managed a 1-0 victory over Madagascar but then suffered a narrow defeat to Comoros. They are currently fourth in Group I.

In an interview with Kessben FM, Malik Jabir advocated for the inclusion of local players, especially Michael Ampadu, who has impressed in the Ghanaian top-flight despite Hearts of Oak’s struggles.

“Hearts of Oak’s right-back Michael Ampadu is a good defender. He is physically strong, and for me, these are the players you promote as a coach. Such players need to be given the chance to try. We shouldn’t think about the clubs they belong to. Just look at how tough the player is and give those players the chance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ghana coach Otto Addo is set to announce his squad on Wednesday for the crucial games next month.
