Former Liberty Professionals coach, JE Sarpong, has voiced his concerns about the current state of the Ghana Premier League, calling for a professional overhaul to improve the conditions and branding of the league.
In a recent interview with Accra-based Mothers FM, Sarpong highlighted the struggles faced by players due to the league’s lack of professionalism.
According to Sarpong, players are forced to buy their own equipment, receive poor salaries, and are often tasked with performing additional duties such as washing team managers’ cars or preparing food to receive their allowances. He argued that these conditions are not professional and that the league needs to be rebranded before it can be considered a professional league.
“What is professional about our league? We have to brand it well before we can call it a professional league,” Sarpong said. “There’s nothing professional about the league because the salary is not good, the players buy their own boots. You have to wash your team manager’s car or pound fufu for them before you can get your chop money. I know what I’m talking about. The player will later move to Togo to play and is a whole lot.”
The Ghana Premier League is currently without a headline sponsor following betPawa’s sudden withdrawal last year.
Despite this setback, Samartex emerged as the 2023/24 season champions and will represent Ghana in the CAF Champions League.
