Asante Kotoko to shake up Ghana Premier League with proposal to increase foreign player quota at GFA congress

Asante Kotoko, one of Ghana’s most successful football clubs, is set to make a significant proposal at the upcoming Congress of the Ghana Football Association (GFA.

The proposal aims to amend Article 26(5) of the Ghana Premier League Regulations, which currently restricts the number of foreign players a club can register and field on match day.

According to the current regulation, a club is allowed to register a maximum of five non-Ghanaian nationals in their squad, but not more than three can make a matchday squad. However, Asante Kotoko is seeking to change this regulation to allow for more foreign players to be registered and fielded by clubs.

The proposal is part of the club’s plan to strengthen its squad ahead of the 2024/25 football season. Asante Kotoko has already signed three foreign players this month, including Samba O’Neil from Congo, who impressed in his debut match against Hearts of Oak, earning him Man of the Match honors.

The club plans to recruit additional foreign players to augment its squad, and the proposed amendment will give them the flexibility to do so. The proposal is set to be discussed at the GFA Congress next month, and if approved, it could have significant implications for the Ghana Premier League.

The move could lead to a more competitive league, with clubs having more options to choose from when it comes to assembling their squads. However, it could also raise concerns about the impact on local talent and the development of Ghanaian footballers. The GFA Congress will have to carefully consider the proposal and weigh the potential benefits against any potential drawbacks.

Asante Kotoko’s decision to propose this amendment reflects its ambition to compete at the highest level and bring success back to the club. The move will be closely watched by fans and stakeholders in Ghanaian football, and its outcome will have significant implications for the sport in the country.
