Peter Hyballa has resigned as head coach of South African football club Sekhukhune United following allegations of misconduct, including claims of a sex scandal.

The 48-year-old German left his post after just over a month in charge, without having led the team in an official match.

His sudden departure has raised eyebrows, particularly as the club had initially cited work permit issues for his absence.

Sources close to the club suggest a compromising video may have been shared with officials, intensifying the scandal. The 48-year-old lasted just over a month in his role as Babina Noko coach before leaving under scandalous circumstances.

The Sunday World newspaper reported it had seen footage allegedly showing Hyballa engaging in sexual activities at a Johannesburg brothel.

Club chairman Simon Malatji appeared to confirm knowledge of the video, saying the two parties had “agreed to go their separate ways”.

Reports indicate Hyballa’s relationship with the players was strained, contributing to unease within the squad. The departure of trusted video analyst Tinashe Shingai Mukandatsama to rivals Mamelodi Sundowns is also rumoured to be linked to a fallout with Hyballa.

Despite the controversy, Sekhukhune’s interim coach, David Makhubedu, maintained the work permit narrative, even after leading the team to a 1-0 defeat against Cape Town City in the MTN8 cup competition.

Sekhukhune are now said to be considering the return of former head coach Lehlohonolo Seema, just weeks after his departure.

The club, known as Babina Noko, now face the challenge of stabilising the team following this off-field turmoil. The fallout from this scandal is likely to impact the club’s performance and reputation moving forward.
