UCL Week 1 on Thursday: Check out the performances of African players

Algerian Ramiz Zerouki enjoyed the entire first half of Feyenoord’s 4-0 thrashing by Bayer Leverkusen. Another Algerian International Anis Hadj Moussa played 30 minutes for Feyernoord. 23-year-old Ivorian midfielder Chris Nadje enjoyed 23 minutes of action for the Rotherdam-based club while Ghanaian youngster Ibrahim Osman was an unused substitute.

Nigerian forward Victor Boniface and Burkinabe international Edmund Tapsoba both started for Bayer Leverkusen. Moroccan International Adli enjoyed the last 20 minutes while Nigerian winger Nathan Tella was an unsed substitute for the Germans.

Burkinabe international Issa Kabore lasted 54 minutes for Benfica in their 2-1 win in Serbia against Red Star after replacing Bah in the 37th minute.

Red Star had seven African players in their matchday squad with three starting. Nasser Djiga (Burkina Faso), Silas (Dr Congo) and Peter Olayinka (Nigeria) all started. Dalcio (Guinea Bissau), Ndiaye (Senegal) and Milson (Angola): scorer of the consolation goal for Red Star all came from the bench. Guelor Kanga of Gabon did not get the opportunity to play for Red Star from the bench in the 2-1 defeat to Benfica.

Ademola Lookman played 89 minutes for Atalanta in Bergamo against Arsenal. Ivorian defender Odilon Kossounou was an unused substitute for the Italians. Arsenal started Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey in midfield but was substituted in the 58th minute.
21-year-old Moroccan midfielder Salah Oulad M’hand was on the bench for the Gunners in the goalless draw at Atalanta.

30-year-old Mozambiquan defender, Renildo Mandava started and completed 90 minutes for Atletico Madrid in the 2-1 win over RB Leipzig.

Malian midfielder Amadou Haidara enjoyed the entire 90 minutes for RB Leipzig in Madrid.

Senegalese forward Abdallah Sima snatched the winner for Brest against Sturm Graz. Mama Balde of Guinea Bissau, Abdoulaye Ndiaye of Senegal and Ibrahim Salah of Morocco were not used from the bench by Brest but Malian duo Kamory Doumbia and Massadio Haidara played 20 and 7 minutes respectively.

Amady Camara and Malick Yalcouye of Mali made substitute appearances for Sturm Graz in the 2-1 defeat in France.

Five Africans were in Monaco’s matchday squad with four of them starting. Ghana’s Salisu, Singo of Ivory Coast, Lamine Camara of Senegal and Ben Seghir of Morocco all were started by Adolf Hutter. Krepin Diatta was not used from the bench by Monaco.
