“We will try to secure at least a win in our remaining games to qualify automatically” – Sudan coach Kwesi Appiah

Head coach of Sudan’s Men’s National Football Team, James Kwasi Appiah, expressed a blend of satisfaction and regret following his team’s 2-0 victory over Ghana in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

While the win significantly boosted Sudan’s chances of qualifying for the tournament in Morocco, Appiah lamented that it came at the expense of his former team.

In his post-match press conference, Appiah noted the importance of the victory, which brought Sudan’s points tally to seven in Group F, leaving Ghana struggling in third place with just two points from four matches. Despite the positive outcome for his side, Appiah was candid about his disappointment regarding Ghana’s dwindling chances.

“Every game is serious, but Insha Allah, in the next match, we will try to secure at least a win to qualify automatically. It’s unfortunate because Ghana has a good team, and it’s regrettable that one of us—Ghana or us—has to exit the competition. Unfortunately for Ghana, Sudan has beaten them, so we will continue to push forward,” he stated.

Appiah’s comments reflect the competitive nature of the qualifiers and the shared history between him and the Black Stars, as he aims to lead Sudan to their AFCON aspirations.
