1. Are Bibiani Gold Stars title contenders or pretenders?
It’s just Week 7 so it will not be necessary to talk about any title challenge although we will soon reach the one-third stage of the season. Bibiani Gold Stars remains unbeaten in the first 7 games of the season. This is so incredible for Frimpong Manso and his charges. 4 home wins alongside 3 away draws have put the club on top of the table and its all down to consistency and hardwork under the tutelage of the former Bofoakwa Tano head coach, Frimpong Manso. Bibiani is dreaming of an unimaginable title albeit it’s too early. You cant begrudge anyone if he/she says Bibiani Gold Stars are contenders for the title. The 2-0 win over Aduana on Sunday afternon has further strengthened the mindset of the Bibiani-based club. Can they enjoy the marathon race with Kotoko, Medeama and Samartex?
2. Legon Cities are in trouble
The Royals are falling free like they are on a quick sand. They just keep on falling and falling and falling. Legon Cities got whipped at the Berekum Golden City Park 3-1 by Berekum Chelsea on Sunday. It was the 5th defeat of the seadon for Paa Kwesi Fabian’s side. They have secured one draw and has a game in hand against Asante Kotoko on Wednesday at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. Failling to win aginst Fabulous will mean that they will be winless in 7 games. They are playing like a team destined to be relegated. Zero motivation, zero spirit and zero understanding in the playing body. The Royals are in a huge trouble and they have to start picking points.
3. Heart of Lions suffers first defeat at Karela
Abdul Latif converted from the penalty spot after Hardi Mohammed was brought down very late in the game to hand Bashir Hayford’s Heart of Lions their first defeat of the season. In fact, It was their first defeat in the last 15 GPL games since the 1-0 defeat in Aduana in April 2024 in week 26 of the 2023-24 season. This shows how great Bashir Hayford has been. The Kpando-based club had been declared unofficially as the draw masters after drawing 5 of the 6 games played before week 7. They nearly left Tamale with another draw but Karela had other plans. Heart of Lions have become one of the difficult sides to beat in Ghana now but must start turning the draws into wins.
4. Medeama returns to winning ways
One of the title challengers struggled in their last three games. Medeama SC failed to score against Heart of Lions, Samartex and Bechem United with the Tarkwa club losing 2-0 at Bechem in week 6. The defeat sent a huge message to the Mauve and Yellow that they have to play above their usual standards to be in hunt for their second title in three years. Head coach Nebojsa Kapor needed to engage his boys and after a series of one-on-one talks, his men responded with a hard fought victory over the unbeaten Nations FC. Back on track with a win, their next fixture is a trip to Dormaa Ahenkro to face the wounded Aduana Stars. They have to continue winning because they are in for a huge battle for the title.
5. Asante Kotoko enjoying life in Obuasi
When the NSA decided to close down Baba Yara Sports Stadium for renovation, Fabulous were considering one of DR Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in Abrankese and the Obuasi Len Clay Sports Stadium as the new home. Obuasi won the race and Kotoko are now playing their home games there. The town has unbelievably welcomed Asante Kotoko with all their hearts. It is sometimes shocking to see a team being supported this way from outside their home. Asante Kotoko has seen fans trooping into the Obuasi Len Clay Sports Stadium to suport the team since they moved from Kumasi. Fabulous has won 10 points from possible 12 with wins over Nsoatreman, Accra Lions and Samartex in Obuasi. Nsoatreman and Accra Lions won at the Baba Yara Sports last season against the Porcupine Warriors but Obuasi has been able to sink them. Life is so sweet for Kotoko in Obuasi and no one can deny it.
