Ignatius Osei-Fosu, assistant coach of the Sudan national football team, has revealed an ambitious promise made by head coach Kwasi Appiah during a meeting with the Sudanese Football Association (FA).
Speaking on Pure Sports, Osei-Fosu disclosed that Appiah assured the Sudan FA he would help the team qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a target that was not included in their original contract.
“When we (the Sudan technical team) met the Sudanese FA, Coach Kwasi Appiah told them in the meeting that he would help them qualify for the World Cup when it was not in our contract,” Osei-Fosu shared.
Appiah’s bold commitment highlights his belief in the potential of Sudan’s national team despite the challenges they face. Although Sudan has struggled in recent years, particularly in continental competition, the team has shown signs of progress under Appiah’s leadership.
Since his appointment as head coach in October 2023, Appiah has already led Sudan to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. The team has also made a strong start to their World Cup qualification campaign, sitting atop Group B with 10 points from four matches, two points ahead of 2021 African champions Senegal.
Appiah, who previously led Ghana’s Black Stars to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, has been instrumental in Sudan’s recent successes, securing three wins and one draw in the World Cup qualifiers.
Sudan’s next challenge will be against Senegal as they aim to consolidate their position at the top of the group.
