Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has shed light on the difficulties he encountered during his tenure as leader of the Black Stars, alleging that certain individuals within the team worked to undermine his authority.

During an Instagram Live session, Gyan spoke candidly about the divisions that plagued the national team during his captaincy, which he says tarnished his legacy and created a toxic environment.

“In my time as captain of the national team, I was alone. I only delivered on the field,” Gyan stated. “The young players would come into the team, excited to see me. Then, three days later, they would start avoiding me—all because they had been brainwashed.”

The legendary striker accused specific figures within the camp of instigating discord and encouraging disrespect among younger players.

“People brainwashed the kids against me, so they didn’t respect me. After my departure, you can see the effect. Look back at those who were brainwashed—where are they now?” he questioned.

Gyan also revisited one of the most controversial moments of his captaincy: the backlash over placing his image on the captain’s armband during a milestone achievement.

“Instead of celebrating my 50th goal, you focused on my face on the captain’s armband,” he lamented.

His revelations underscore long-standing issues of division and internal cliques within the Black Stars, which have frequently disrupted team harmony.

Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals, captained the Black Stars from 2012 to 2019. Despite his significant contributions, his leadership period was marked by both triumphs and controversies.
