Black Stars forward Jordan Ayew is reportedly the frontrunner to take over the captaincy of the senior national team ahead of Ghana’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March.
According to multiple reports in the local media, Ayew is expected to wear the captain’s armband when Ghana faces Chad and Madagascar next month.
The captaincy reshuffle comes after first deputy captain Thomas Partey declined to retain his position. As a result, Alexander Djiku has been appointed as the new first deputy captain.
Reports further suggest that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has introduced a new selection method for the Black Stars captaincy, prioritizing long service as the key criterion.
These changes will officially take effect in March, just in time for the Black Stars’ upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Meanwhile, Ghana is set to host Chad on March 17 before traveling to face Madagascar on March 24 in Matchday five and six of the qualifiers.
