Ghanaian forward Prince Adu Kwabena has opened up about his lengthy injury layoff and the frustration of spending nearly two years on the sidelines before making his return to competitive football.
The 21-year-old rose to prominence as a 16-year-old with Bechem United, becoming the youngest player to feature in the Ghana Premier League at the time. His impressive performances earned him recognition from The Guardian, which included him in its list of the top 60 young footballers in the world in 2020.
However, his rapid progress was halted by a meniscus injury, which sidelined him for almost two years, marking a devastating period in his young career.
After recovering, Adu Kwabena signed a four-year deal with Ukrainian club Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih, where he impressed in his debut season. His performances earned him a move to Czech giants Viktoria Plzeň, where he is currently enjoying a strong campaign.
Speaking to Flashscore, the talented forward admitted that the injury nearly forced him to quit football due to the prolonged recovery process.
“It was a really difficult moment in my life because I had never experienced an injury before.”
“I decided to quit football because my knee was not healing. I didn’t know whether I could come back and play football again. I didn’t know how I would do the surgery or recover.”
Adu Kwabena was part of Ghana’s Black Satellites squad for the 2021 U-20 AFCON, but his injury ruled him out of the tournament.
Now fully fit and performing well in Czech football, the young striker is determined to reignite his promising career.
