Asante Kotoko marked their return to competitive football in style, securing a 2-0 victory over Legon Cities at the Baba Yara Stadium.

The win propelled them to the top of the Ghana Premier League, tied on points with Bibiani GoldStars but ahead due to their superior head-to-head record.

The match was preceded by an emotional tribute to the late Nana Pooley, a devoted Kotoko supporter who tragically lost his life in a recent act of violence. In his honour, a minute of silence was observed, and Kotoko players held up a banner paying their respects.

Despite being sidelined for over a month due to the league’s suspension following Pooley’s passing, Kotoko showed no signs of rust. They controlled proceedings from the onset and broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when full-back Patrick Asiedu unleashed a stunning strike from outside the box. His well-placed shot found the bottom left corner, leaving the Legon Cities goalkeeper with no chance.

Kotoko remained dominant throughout but had to wait until the 87th minute to secure their victory. Striker Kwame Opoku earned a penalty and confidently dispatched it, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to double their lead.

The Porcupine Warriors finished the match with 71% possession and 11 attempts on goal, while Legon Cities struggled to pose a threat, failing to register a single shot on target.

With this result, Kotoko reclaim the top spot in the league, while Legon Cities remain in the relegation zone, still searching for form and consistency.
