Asante Kotoko fought back to earn a crucial 1-1 draw against defending champions Samartex in a highly competitive clash at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The result keeps the Porcupine Warriors at the top of the Ghana Premier League table, though their lead remains precarious, with second-placed Bibiani GoldStars just a point behind and set to play on Sunday.

Samartex Dominate First Half, Kotoko Respond After the Break

Samartex took control early and broke the deadlock in the 39th minute through Dramani Awuah, who unleashed a powerful low drive past the Kotoko goalkeeper. The hosts, eager to avenge their 1-0 defeat to Kotoko earlier this season, dominated the first half, limiting their opponents’ attacking chances.

Kotoko, however, came out stronger in the second half, increasing their intensity and pushing for an equalizer. Their persistence paid off when Kwame Opoku found the net with a well-taken strike, leveling the score. The in-form forward later thought he had completed the turnaround with a second goal, but it was ruled out for offside, denying him a brace.

Kotoko Hold Firm to Secure a Valuable Point

The final moments of the game saw Samartex push hard for a late winner, but Kotoko’s defense stood resolute to ensure they left Samreboi with a valuable point.

Opoku’s goal marked his sixth of the season, further solidifying his reputation as a crucial figure for Kotoko, especially in second-half performances. His ability to influence games in the latter stages has been key to the Porcupine Warriors’ title ambitions.

League Standings After the Draw

Despite the draw, Kotoko remain atop the table with 41 points, just one ahead of Bibiani GoldStars, who have a chance to overtake them when they face Aduana Stars in Dormaa on Sunday.

Samartex, meanwhile, find themselves in ninth place, struggling to keep up in their title defense as the league enters its decisive phase.
