Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has made a strong case for the inclusion of locally-based players in the Black Stars, following his outstanding performances in Ghana’s recent World Cup qualifiers.

The 32-year-old shot-stopper, who made his national team debut in the March international break, played a pivotal role in Ghana’s victories against Chad and Madagascar. Asare kept two clean sheets, helping the Black Stars secure six crucial points and extend their lead at the top of Group I.

In an exclusive interview with 3Sports’ Mutala Yakubu in Morocco, Asare emphasized the need for local players to be given opportunities in the national team if they prove their quality.

“I am happy with the confidence they have in me and the support. I am glad I lived up to expectations. If a local player is good, he deserves a platform. Sometimes people think once you are a local player, the national team will be difficult, but we are very determined,” he stated.

Despite his age, Asare’s first national team call-up came only recently, highlighting his perseverance and dedication. His emergence echoes the legacy of past Ghanaian goalkeeping greats such as Richard Kingson, George Owu, and Sammy Adjei, all of whom made their mark in the national team after excelling in the domestic league.

As Ghana pushes forward in its World Cup qualifying campaign, Asare’s presence provides valuable experience and leadership. His story is an inspiration to young players in the local league, proving that hard work and determination can lead to national recognition.

With more crucial qualifiers ahead, Ghanaian football fans will be eager to see if Asare can continue his strong form and cement his place in the Black Stars.
