The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has officially outlined the new Black Stars captaincy structure, with Jordan Ayew leading the team as captain.

Earlier reports suggested that Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey had declined to continue as deputy captain, paving the way for Ayew’s promotion to the main leadership role. However, speaking to Metro TV, Asante Twum clarified that Partey remains the first vice-captain, with Mohammed Kudus and Alexander Djiku serving as the second and third vice-captains, respectively.

“It is not about individual aspirations, it is about what we want to do together, and it is about believing in the plan and believing in the vision. The coach has taken a decision to make Jordan Ayew the captain, with Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, and Alexander Djiku serving as the first, second, and third vice-captains of the Black Stars. These players are aware of the structure and the order,” he stated.

Jordan Ayew’s Strong Start as Captain

The Leicester City forward began his tenure as Black Stars captain in impressive fashion, leading Ghana to back-to-back victories during the March international break in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Ghana dominated Chad with a 5-0 victory at the Accra Sports Stadium before securing another commanding 3-0 win against Madagascar in the fifth and sixth rounds of the qualifiers.

These victories have propelled the Black Stars to the top of Group I, with four matches remaining in the qualification campaign. The team will reconvene in September 2025 as they continue their quest for a place at the 2026 World Cup.
