“I am 200% confident Ghana will qualify for the 2026 World Cup” – Jerome Opoku

English-born Ghanaian defender Jerome Opoku has expressed his excitement after finally making his full competitive debut for the Black Stars, stating that he always believed his opportunity would come.

The 26-year-old has been part of the Ghana senior national team setup since 2023 but struggled for game time due to competition from established defenders such as Alexander Djiku, Mohammed Salisu, and Daniel Amartey.

Opoku made his first unofficial appearance for Ghana in a friendly against the USA in 2023 and later featured in other friendlies against Nigeria and Uganda. However, his long-awaited competitive debut came during the recent international window, where he made a substitute appearance against Chad before earning his first competitive start in Ghana’s 3-0 victory over Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking in an interview with Flashscore, Opoku expressed his pride in representing Ghana and his determination to secure a permanent role in the squad.

“I’ve been working really hard and looking forward to getting my chance in the national team. I knew this day would come, and I was ready to help the team. It has always been a dream and a privilege to wear the national colors and defend Ghana.”

He admitted he was slightly surprised to start against Madagascar but emphasized his readiness to deliver.

“I was a little surprised to start against Madagascar, but I had always prepared for my moment. I hope I met expectations and didn’t disappoint Ghanaians or the team. I’m super happy to finally make my official and full competitive debut for my country—it’s an honor.”

Beyond his debut, Opoku is highly confident in Ghana’s chances of securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“I am 200% confident we will qualify. That’s the aim and the dream. We know the job isn’t done yet, and it won’t be easy, but we will fight until the end to ensure we finish first in our group and qualify.”

“We are working diligently to improve our game and secure the necessary results in the remaining matches. We remain focused on the task ahead and believe we will achieve our goal.”

Opoku has been in impressive form in the Turkish Süper Lig this season, scoring two goals and providing three assists in 24 appearances for Istanbul Başakşehir. His performances at club level further bolster his credentials as a key figure for the Black Stars moving forward.
