GFA Committed to rebuilding Black Stars into African powerhouse – Henry Asante Twum

Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has reaffirmed the FA’s dedication to restoring the Black Stars as one of the strongest teams on the African continent.

Following a difficult 2024 campaign that saw Ghana win only two of their ten matches and miss out on qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) — a first in over 20 years — there is renewed hope surrounding the national team’s future.

The Black Stars have begun 2025 brightly, claiming back-to-back victories against Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers during the March international break. The wins have significantly boosted Ghana’s chances of booking a place at the tournament, which will be held across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Speaking to the Ghana FA’s media team, Asante Twum emphasised the association’s long-term vision for the team.

“We want to try as much as possible to continue our rebuilding process, to continue the effort in making the team one of the best on the continent,” he said.

“It will not come easy, it will come with a lot of friendlies, a lot of engagements, a lot of competitive matches and what have you.”

As part of efforts to strengthen the team and provide more competitive opportunities, Ghana will participate in a four-nation tournament in May, featuring Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica.

The friendly tournament, dubbed the Unity Cup, will be hosted in London, with the Black Stars set to face Nigeria in their opening match on May 28.

“Luckily, we received this proposal [Unity Cup] from Afro Sports [UK-based Match agency], and then we expressed interest in it,” Asante Twum revealed.

“We are not overly concerned about results. We are concerned about our team-building agenda.”

The recent momentum has already begun to reflect positively, with Ghana climbing one spot in the latest FIFA World Rankings, marking their first upward movement since July 2024.

With renewed focus and growing optimism, the GFA is hopeful that Ghana’s national team is on the path to reclaiming its place among Africa’s football elite.
