Heart of Lions head coach Bashir Hayford has voiced his frustration over the lack of effective goal scorers in Ghana’s local football scene, criticizing strikers for their inability to convert chances into goals.
Speaking during a media engagement after their draw with Kotoko, Hayford stated, “In Ghana, we have strikers but we don’t have finishers. They will run, run, run and even when they get the chance, they will mess it up.”
His comments highlight a growing concern among local coaches over the inefficiency in front of goal that has plagued several clubs in the Ghana Premier League.
The experienced coach, who has managed multiple top-flight clubs and previously handled the national team, believes the issue is not about work rate or effort, but rather the lack of composure and technical ability required to finish off chances—an essential quality for any top striker.
Heart of Lions, who are battling to improve their standing in the league, have struggled with goal-scoring this season—an issue Hayford attributes largely to the poor finishing ability of his forwards.
For Heart of Lions, the draw keeps them in third place on 41 points, preserving their strong standing in the league. The Kpando-based club will next face Berekum Chelsea, another side in the hunt for a top-four finish.
