Accra Lions delivered one of their best performances of the season to stun league leaders Asante Kotoko with a resounding 3-0 win at the Accra Sports Stadium, giving their survival hopes a massive boost.
Man of the Match Jacob Awoute set the tone early, netting the opener after a chaotic sequence in the Kotoko box. Awoute first set up Ahmed Yousif with a brilliant solo run, only for Yousif’s shot to hit the post. A double rebound then fell kindly to Awoute, who calmly slotted home to give the hosts the lead.
Despite a bright start from the Porcupine Warriors — with Daniel Adjetey and Albert Amoah coming close and a miscommunication between Musa Hamzata and Daniel Afful nearly proving costly — it was Accra Lions who struck first blood.
Just before the break, Awoute once again played the architect, slicing through the Kotoko midfield before teeing up Yao Sokpoli, who coolly finished to make it 2-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Lions coach Rainer Kraft introduced David Akintunde for Sokpoli — a change that paid off handsomely. Akintunde’s energy troubled Kotoko’s backline, and he eventually capped off a swift counter-attack, latching onto a pass from right-back Fuzy Taylor. The substitute twisted past his markers and unleashed a thunderous left-footed strike to seal the victory.
Kotoko pressed for a way back into the match, with Kwame Opoku and Amoah both going close, and winger Wisdom Bassey offering threats from the flanks. However, Accra Lions stood firm defensively to protect their clean sheet and round off a memorable afternoon.
The result dents Kotoko’s title charge while giving Accra Lions renewed momentum in their bid to avoid relegation.
