Former Black Stars captain John Mensah has called on Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu to consider a return to the English Premier League, describing it as the best league in the world and an ideal platform for the 26-year-old to further his career.

Salisu, who currently plies his trade with AS Monaco in Ligue 1, has already built an impressive resume, having featured in three of Europe’s top five leagues—La Liga with Real Valladolid, the Premier League with Southampton, and now Ligue 1 in France. He spent three seasons with Southampton, making over 60 appearances and establishing himself as a solid presence in their backline.

Since joining Monaco in the summer of 2023, Salisu has shown flashes of brilliance, even though consistent playing time has been a challenge. This season, the towering centre-back has featured 26 times across all competitions, scoring three goals—one each in the Ligue 1, Coupe de France, and UEFA Champions League.

In an interview with Africa Foot, John Mensah—who himself played in top leagues including Ligue 1 with Lyon, Serie A, and the Premier League with Sunderland—shared his belief in Salisu’s potential to succeed on any stage.

“He [Mohammed Salisu] has the qualities to thrive anywhere. He already knows the intensity and demands of the Premier League,” Mensah said.

He went on to highlight the benefits of a Premier League return, while also acknowledging Salisu’s versatility and adaptability to other European leagues.

“A return to what I consider the best league in the world would be beneficial for his career. But while he has options in Spain, Italy, or Germany, he also has the profile to shine there,” he added.

Much like Salisu, Mensah enjoyed a career that spanned several of Europe’s top leagues and earned over 80 caps for Ghana’s senior national team. His words carry weight, especially for a player like Salisu, who still has many promising years ahead in his career.
