Ghana’s U15 dreams dashed by Tanzania in African Schools Championship Semifinal

Ghana’s hopes of clinching the African Schools Football Championship on home soil were dashed on Thursday after a narrow 1-0 semifinal loss to reigning champions Tanzania at the University of Ghana Stadium.

An early strike from Tanzania’s Sadam Hamis in just the second minute was all it took to separate the two sides, as Ghana’s young talents struggled to recover from the early setback. Despite a determined display and numerous efforts to break down Tanzania’s defense, the hosts couldn’t find the breakthrough they needed.

Ghana entered the semifinal with confidence, having topped Group A in dominant fashion—defeating Uganda 2-0, South Africa 1-0, and Algeria 3-0 without conceding a single goal. But against Tanzania, who advanced from Group B after a goalless draw with Ivory Coast and a 1-0 win over DR Congo, the Black Starlets couldn’t maintain their winning momentum.

The loss marks a disappointing end to Ghana’s title ambitions, but the team will have one last shot at glory as they prepare for the third-place playoff, hoping to finish the tournament on a positive note.

Tanzania, meanwhile, have booked their spot in Saturday’s final, where they will take on Senegal. The West Africans edged Uganda 6-5 on penalties after a tense 0-0 stalemate in regulation time.

Though the defeat stings, Ghana’s U15 team can take pride in their strong showing throughout the tournament. Their spirited performances highlight the promise within the youth ranks and reinforce the importance of sustained investment in grassroots football.

As the team turns its attention to the bronze medal match, there’s still a chance to finish on the podium—and to walk away with lessons that could shape the future of Ghana’s next footballing generation.
