Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly attracted interest from one of the African clubs set to participate in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
Africa will be represented at the expanded global tournament by South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, Egypt’s Al Ahly, Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club, and Tunisia’s Esperance de Tunis. As these clubs actively strengthen their squads ahead of the prestigious competition in the United States, a report from Spanish outlet Marca suggests that Wydad AC—formerly coached by Rulani Mokwena—are considering an ambitious move for Ronaldo.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is currently contracted to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr. However, Marca claims that Ronaldo could be on his way out, with speculation mounting over his future as his current deal expires on June 30, 2025.
According to Transfermarkt, the 40-year-old’s contract with Al Nassr is unlikely to be renewed, opening the door for a potential shock move. Wydad, keen to make a statement signing ahead of the Club World Cup, are reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing the legendary forward to Casablanca.
The Moroccan giants, placed in Group G of the tournament, are set to face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, Italian giants Juventus, and UAE’s Al Ain. Wydad’s recent coaching change following Mokwena’s departure may signal a new direction for the club—one that could include a marquee signing like Ronaldo.
While Wydad are not the only club linked with the former Real Madrid and Manchester United icon—Brazilian side Botafogo, one of the four Brazilian representatives at the Club World Cup, are also said to be monitoring his situation—the potential move to Morocco would mark a historic moment for African club football.
