Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia FC have officially named Charles Kwablan Akonnor as their new head coach. The former Ghana international and Black Stars coach has signed a two-year contract with the club, marking his first coaching job outside Ghana.
Akonnor, 52, will work alongside a Ghanaian technical team. Bismark Kobby-Mensah will serve as his assistant, while Ben Owu takes on the role of goalkeeper trainer.
In a statement shared on their official platforms, Gor Mahia expressed excitement about the appointment, highlighting Akonnor’s vast experience both as a player and coach. The club believes his leadership will be vital as they aim to rebuild and compete strongly in CAF inter-club competitions.
Before taking up the role in Kenya, Akonnor had managed top Ghanaian clubs including Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, AshantiGold, and Dreams FC. He also previously led the Ghana national team, the Black Stars.
Akonnor enjoyed a notable playing career in Germany, featuring for Fortuna Köln and VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. He began his coaching journey at the Right to Dream Academy and later moved to clubs like Eleven Wise and Dreams FC.
Gor Mahia, the most successful club in the Kenyan Premier League, are undergoing a major rebuild after a challenging season, and see Akonnor’s appointment as a step toward reclaiming their dominance on the continent.
