Benjamin Henrichs, a German-Ghanaian defender is still waiting to make his first appearance of the season for RB Leipzig after tearing his Achilles tendon, with his last competitive game for the club dating back to December of last year.
Head coach Ole Werner has now offered a cautiously optimistic update on when the 28-year-old full-back could be back with the team.
Werner explained in his pre-match press conference before the Friday game against Borussia Mainchengladbach that Leipzig “hope to integrate him again during this calendar year”, but stressed that patience is essential and the club will give Henrichs all the time he needs. A comeback before the winter break is effectively off the table, as setbacks during his rehab forced the player and medical staff to slow the process and take a few steps back along the way.
The current target is for Henrichs to join in parts of full team training sometime in December, provided his tendon reacts well to increased workload.
The timing is crucial for the defenderl, who wants to regain match fitness and rhythm ahead of the 2026 World Cup after having started Germany’s 1-1 Nations League draw with Hungary on 19 November 2024 in his last outing before the long layoff.
