Karl Etta Eyong handed Cameroon a winning start to their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign after scoring the decisive goal in a narrow but hard-earned victory over Gabon in Morocco.
The Indomitable Lions, led for the first time in a competitive match by new head coach David Pagou, showed early intent and discipline as they pushed for a positive beginning following changes on the technical bench.
Cameroon found the breakthrough just six minutes into the contest when Karl Etta Eyong calmly finished off a well-weighted pass from Bryan Mbeumo. Although the goal was initially disallowed for offside, a VAR review overturned the decision, allowing the early strike to stand.
Cameroon continued to threaten, with Samuel Kotto narrowly missing the target with a header from another accurate Bryan Mbeumo delivery. Gabon had a rare opportunity before halftime, but Denis Bouanga’s close-range attempt was bravely blocked to preserve Cameroon’s lead.
In the second half, Cameroon were forced into an adjustment when midfielder Carlos Baleba failed to return after the break due to injury. Despite the setback and increased pressure, the five-time African champions remained organised and composed.
Bryan Mbeumo later went into the referee’s book in the 79th minute for a late challenge, but Cameroon held firm in the closing stages to secure all three points.
The victory places Cameroon in a strong position as they prepare to face defending champions Ivory Coast in their next Group match on December 28.
