Joe Touomou, a FIBA-certified basketball instructor, has called for stronger support and continuity for all-female basketball coaching clinics following a groundbreaking program held at the University of Ghana, Legon Campus.
Joe Touomou described the initiative as a historic moment, noting that it was the first time such an all-women-focused coaching experience had been organized under the Giants of Africa framework. He stressed that the success of the clinic should serve as motivation to expand similar programs across the country and beyond.
The coaching clinic was organized through a collaboration between the Ghana Basketball Federation and Giants of Africa, a youth-focused organization that uses basketball as a tool for empowerment across the continent. The initiative forms part of Giants of Africa’s wider engagement in Ghana, which includes the upcoming unveiling of a newly built basketball court at the Demonstration School for the Deaf in Mampong Akuapem, contributing to the organization’s goal of constructing 100 courts across Africa.
Joe Touomou emphasized that the responsibility now lies with the participating coaches to continue improving their knowledge of the game. He explained that consistent learning and practical application of new skills with young players would be key to sustaining the impact of the program.
Senior figures from the Ghana Basketball Federation, including its president Alex Kukula, vice president Ayitey Bulley, and other experienced coaches, were present to support and guide the participants throughout the session.
Ghana Basketball Federation Treasurer Aurora Commodore-Toppar expressed satisfaction with the depth of knowledge shared during the clinic, stating that participants were exposed to both familiar and new aspects of coaching. She added that the focus now would be on effectively applying the lessons learned to develop players at the grassroots level.
The clinic is being widely viewed as a major step toward promoting women’s participation and leadership in basketball coaching in Ghana.
