Former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has made a strong case for a tactical rethink in the Black Stars, calling on head coach Otto Addo to deploy Antoine Semenyo on the wings rather than as a central striker.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Akoma FM, Agyemang-Badu argued that Semenyo is being used out of position for the national team and believes the approach limits his effectiveness.
“Semenyo is not a natural number nine, and we should stop forcing him into that role,” the former Udinese midfielder said. “He is far more effective on the wings, just as Manchester City are currently using him.”
Semenyo has enjoyed a flying start to life at Manchester City following his £65 million move from Bournemouth in January. The 25-year-old has already registered three goals and one assist in his first four appearances, quickly establishing himself as a key figure in Pep Guardiola’s setup.
Agyemang-Badu stressed that Semenyo’s club form and preferred role should influence how he is utilised by the Black Stars, especially with the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching.
“He is our poster boy at the moment,” he noted. “The coach must play him in his natural position so we can get the very best out of him.”
According to Agyemang-Badu, operating from wide areas would allow Semenyo to fully exploit his pace, strength, and direct attacking instincts, while giving Ghana greater attacking balance in crucial matches.
The former Black Stars midfielder’s comments add to the growing tactical debate around the national team, with many believing that optimising Semenyo’s role could be key to Ghana’s ambitions as preparations intensify for the World Cup in North America.
