From Goalposts to Green Card: Black Galaxies and Heart of Lions goalkeeper Lawrence Osei quits GPL for cleaning job in USA

Heart of Lions and Black Galaxies goalkeeper Lawrence Osei has reportedly stepped away from professional football and relocated to the United States in search of better financial opportunities.

The shot-stopper is said to have left Ghana quietly without formally informing his club, teammates, or head coach Bashir Hayford before making the move. His sudden departure has come as a surprise, particularly given his role within the team and his involvement with the Black Galaxies setup.

Sources indicate that Osei’s decision was largely influenced by financial realities. During his time with Heart of Lions, the goalkeeper was reportedly earning around GH₵2,700 per month in the Ghana Premier League — a figure that made it difficult to meet long-term personal and family needs.

He is believed to have been persuaded by a travel agent who presented him with an opportunity to work in the United States, where he could potentially earn about $3,275 monthly — more than GH₵50,000 — in a cleaning job. The significant difference in income is understood to have played a key role in his decision to leave his football career behind, at least for now, in pursuit of a more stable livelihood.

Osei’s quiet exit highlights the financial struggles many locally based players continue to face, with several talents often weighing the passion for football against the need for economic security.

His departure is expected to be a major blow to Heart of Lions, who lose an experienced goalkeeper, while also raising broader concerns about player welfare and sustainability within the domestic league.
