George Afriyie backs GFA’s move to expand Black Stars technical team

Former Ghana Football Association Vice President, George Afriyie, has expressed strong support for the GFA’s decision to strengthen the Black Stars technical team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The football governing body recently expanded the backroom staff, bringing in five experienced professionals. French coach Alain Ravera and Black Queens coach Kim Lars Björkegren will serve as assistant coaches, while Spanish tactician Jose Daniel Martinez Alfonso joins to improve scouting and match analysis. Carlos Lozano Romero returns as physiotherapist after his work with the team at the 2022 World Cup, and British-born Ghanaian performance coach Dwayne Peasah Paa Kwesi completes the revamped setup.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Afriyie, a former Black Stars Management Committee Chairman, praised the move, saying: “A 20-man technical team for the Black Stars makes sense. We’ve delayed this modernisation for too long.” He added that Kim Lars Björkegren’s role is well-justified, noting that coaching the Black Queens does not make him less qualified for the senior team.

The Black Stars will regroup in March for friendlies against Austria and Germany as part of preparations for the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Ghana is drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia, opening their campaign against Panama on June 17, 2026.
