Ghanaian defender Derrick Kohn was on target for Union Berlin, but his effort was not enough to prevent a heavy 4–1 home defeat to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.
Kohn handed the hosts an early advantage at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei after calmly converting a penalty in the 18th minute. The spot-kick was awarded following a VAR review, and the Ghanaian defender made no mistake as he fired past goalkeeper Mio Backhaus to put Union ahead.
However, the visitors quickly turned the match around before halftime. Olivier Deman restored parity in the 31st minute after being set up by Jens Stage, who then completed the turnaround just four minutes later with a header that gave Bremen a 2–1 lead.
Union struggled to recover after the break, and Bremen tightened their grip on the contest midway through the second half when Marco Grüll produced a composed finish to make it 3–1.
The visitors sealed an emphatic victory deep into stoppage time as Patrice Covic added a fourth goal, completing a dominant away performance.
Despite the defeat, Kohn’s strike marked his first goal of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season. The defender has now made 23 league appearances for Union Berlin this campaign, registering one goal and one assist.
Union Berlin will aim to bounce back in their next league outing when they face SC Freiburg away from home on Sunday, March 15.
