Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare says he is unfazed by the prospect of facing some of the world’s most feared forwards at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting confidence and self-belief will guide his performances on football’s biggest stage.

Since making his international debut in March 2025, the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper has quickly established himself as Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper and is widely expected to retain his place heading into the tournament.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia, a section that will test the team’s defensive resilience against elite attacking talent.

Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, Asare dismissed external pressure and criticism, saying such opinions come with the territory of international football.

“They say it always, but it’s their opinion. The moment you reach this level, people will say a lot of things,” he said.

The former Great Olympics goalkeeper acknowledged the calibre of attackers he may face in the tournament but stressed that even top-level goalkeepers concede goals against the best strikers in world football.

“Although by God’s grace I’ve reached this level, some of these players also play against top goalkeepers, who even concede. So how much more me, now making strides thanks to God,” Asare explained.

Asare also underlined that his mindset has not been shaken by wider debates about his readiness for the tournament, insisting the opportunity itself is already a major milestone in his career.

“No, it doesn’t bother me; it rather encourages me because not everyone makes it to this level,” he said.

Beyond individual ambition, the 26-year-old says he is motivated by the desire to elevate the reputation of Ghanaian and African goalkeepers on the global stage, while also achieving success for his family.

“Personally, I’m okay and focused on my career. I want to get a good standing in the world so that this Ghanaian or African goalkeeper is very good. Or get a big achievement for myself and family,” he added.

Ghana, led by coach Carlos Queiroz, will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Ahead of the tournament, the Black Stars will also fine-tune preparations with friendly matches against Mexico later this month and Wales on June 2.
