“Ghana winning the trophy is possible” – CK Akonnor Backs Black Stars for 2026 World Cup run, urges strong start against Panama

Former Black Stars coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor believes Ghana have the quality to make a strong run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but insists their success will largely depend on how they start the tournament.

The current Gor Mahia head coach says picking up maximum points in the opening group game will be crucial for building momentum in a highly competitive Group L.

Ghana have been drawn alongside Panama, England and 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia in the expanded tournament set to be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Speaking to Kumasi-based Akoma FM, Akonnor stressed that an early victory could shape the Black Stars’ entire campaign.

“Ghana winning the World Cup is possible, but the most important thing is for us to win our first game,” he said.

“Our first match is very important for a strong start, and the goal is to win it. Once we do that, knowing Ghana, we will build momentum and improve from there. But it is crucial we start well because after that, we will see things flying high.”

Akonnor added that his confidence in the current squad remains strong, noting that his support is based on belief in the team’s potential to achieve something special on the global stage.

“I have a lot of belief in this team, which is why I’m supporting them. I know they can achieve something special,” he stated.

He also highlighted Ghana’s growing experience at the World Cup, pointing out that the 2026 edition will mark the country’s fifth appearance at the tournament.

“Ghana has come a long way. This will be our fifth World Cup appearance. By now, we should be confident in what we are doing, regardless of the opponent we face,” Akonnor added.

The Black Stars will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field in Toronto, before facing England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. Their final group match will be against Croatia on June 27.

Under head coach Carlos Queiroz, Ghana will be targeting a return to the knockout stages for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run in 2010.
